HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 10) -- Defending series champ Adam Florian edged ahead of Robbie Davis off the final corner and claimed his fourth victory of the season in the 50-lap Top Dog race, the featured event of Sunday afternoon's Arena Racing Hampton Roads program at the Hampton Coliseum. The win was Florian's second in a Top Dog event, to go along with a pair of A Main wins, one of which came earlier in Sunday's show.

Davis drew the pole for the start, sharing the front row with Denver Alvis. C Main winner Jason Styron started third, alongside Florian.

As the event got under way, Alvis remained to the outside of Davis until they reached Turns 3 and 4 for the first time. There, Davis scooted ahead and opened the inside lane for Florian, who moved up to second. Alvis dropped back to third, followed by rookie Josh Ayer and a side-by-side standoff between Styron and Jordan Wood.

The first caution flag waved on lap 5 when Travis Wall spun in Turn 4.

On the double-file restart, Davis quickly cleared Florian, who settled in on the leader's bumper. Meanwhile, Ayer and Wood scuffled for third.

The second caution flag appeared on lap 8 for a multi-car mess at the end of the backstretch. Alvis, Travis Miller and Craig Carlton were involved in the mishap and all three were forced to the sidelines for the duration of the event.

Returning to green, Davis once again rocketed ahead of Florian, leaving the second-place runner to contend with a challenge from Wood. That battled continued until lap 12 when Florian momentarily slowed along the backstretch, giving way to Wood and Derek Miller.

Securely in second, Wood quickly gained ground on the leader. By lap 22, he was parked on Davis' rear bumper. Behind the lead duo, Florian was hunting for a way around third-place Derek Miller. He finally worked alongside Miller on lap 25 and cleared Miller's #50 machine on lap 27. The battle, however, cost him five lengths worth of real estate to the leaders.

Caution #3 flew on lap 32 when Styron spun in Turn 4.

Back under green, Davis easily cleared Wood and left an opening for Florian, who rushed to fill the void to the inside of the second-place runner. Wood fended off Florian's bid, though, and set off after Davis. Meanwhile, series points leader Scott Prillaman got the better of Derek Miller and took over fourth place.

The complexion of the event took a turn on lap 36 when Wood went after Davis for the lead in Turns 1 and 2 and the two briefly tangled. Davis drove away with his lead intact, but Wood wasn't as fortunate, falling to fourth as Florian and Prillaman slipped by.

The last of the race's four yellow flags was unfurled on lap 38 when Ayer spun off Turn 2.

The green flag waved for the final time as the field came around to complete lap 43. Davis won the drag race into Turn 1 to hang onto the top spot. Behind him, Prillaman poked a fender to the inside of Florian, his one-time teammate.

Florian finally cleared Prillaman on lap 47 and rapidly closed in on Davis. He drove to the inside of Davis on lap 48 and the two were still locked door-to-door as the white flag went in the air.

Exiting Turn 4 for the final time, Florian and Davis jostled a bit and Florian surged forward as they headed for the line, winning by 0.316-second. Wood emerged from the race-ending hornet's nest in third, tangling with Davis as they crossed below the flagstand. Prillaman was fourth and Wall rounded out the top five.

Derek Miller and Ayer were sixth and seventh to the stripe, respectively, while Curtis Hughes was eighth, the final driver to complete the entire distance. Styron and Nelson Moody, both early retirees, were credited with ninth and 10th, in that order. Brittany Bangas, Travis Miller, Alvis and Carlton completed the rundown.

A Main

Adam Florian nosed ahead of pole starter Josh Ayer at the beginning of the 50-lap A Main and led the rest of the way for his third win of the season.

The event got off to an inauspicious start as Ayer was more than a car-length clear of Florian when the initial green flag waved. Unsatisfied with the start, officials ordered another try.

Under green for a second time, Florian remained on Ayer's flank, edging out front as they exited Turn 4. Ayer settled in second, followed by Scott Prillaman, Clayton Parrish and Mike Dayton.

The second caution flag flew on lap 5 when Spencer Saunders spun on the backstretch, collecting Jordan Wood.

The third yellow flag waved soon after the ensuing restart as Dayton was punted out of the pack and onto his roof in Turn 2. Chris Raiford was involved in the incident and joined Dayton at the rear of the field.

Back under green, Florian gained a two-length advantage, while Prillaman moved up to challenge Ayer for second. Behind the lead trio, Travis Wall and Robbie Davis scooted past Parrish, who began to slip toward the back of the pack.

On lap 10, Prillaman worked his way alongside Ayer. Following a door-to-door scuffle, which lasted two laps, Prillaman grabbed the second spot. The exchange allowed Florian to extend his margin to a straightaway.

The fourth, and final, caution flag appeared on lap 18 as Dayton careened into the inside barrier along the backstretch.

On the last restart, Florian eked out a slim margin over Prillaman. Deeper in the field, Davis overtook Ayer on lap 20 for third. Hung to the outside, Ayer also gave way to Travis Wall and found himself side-by-side with Wood.

On lap 25, Wall swiped third from Davis. Meanwhile, at the front, Florian had widened his lead to five lengths. Almost half a straightaway separated second-place Prillaman and third-place Wall. Meanwhile, Ayer, Wood and Saunders were nose-to-tail in fifth, sixth and seventh, fighting for the final Top Dog transfer spots

On lap 30, Wood and Saunders briefly locked horns in Turn 4. Wood drove away, in possession of sixth place, while Saunders dropped back.

With the laps beginning to wind down, Florian ran up on lapped traffic in the form of Saunders and Raiford. Prillaman pulled to within four lengths of the leader, but that's as close as he would get as Florian drove on to the win.

Prillaman was second to Florian at the checkers, while Wall, Davis and Ayer completed the top five. Wood was sixth and advanced to the Top Dog shootout along with the top five finishers.

B Main

Brittany Bangas assumed the lead on lap 2 and showed the way to her second feature win of the season in the 50-lap B Main.

Cody Turbitt drew the pole for the start of the event, sharing the front row with Matt Leach. On lap 1, the two battled side-by-side off the fourth corner. They made contact and Leach got wedged into the outside wall.

The first caution flag waved on lap 2 as Leach ground to a halt against the Turn 2 wall. The dust-up also claimed Turbitt, who pulled his machine to the infield. With Turbitt and Leach cooling their heels on the sidelines, the lead passed to Bangas.

Back under green, Anthony Perez pressured Bangas for the top spot. As they reached Turn 4, Bangas spun at the head of the field. Third-place Michael Weddell overturned as cars began to stack up behind the incident. Officials returned Bangas to the lead for the restart, while Perez and Weddell retreated to the rear.

As the race resumed, Bangas forged a narrow margin over Denver Alvis, the new second-place runner. Within a few laps, her lead had grown to nearly three lengths as Alvis tussled with Landon Florian.

On lap 7, Florian slipped underneath Alvis in a bid for second. That bid opened the outside lane for Travis Miller, though, and the two-time series champ came away with third. The shuffle allowed Bangas to pad her advantage to a full straightaway.

Between laps 15 and 27, the yellow flag made three more appearances as drivers jostled for the fourth spot -- and a Top Dog starting spot. Meanwhile, Bangas, Alvis and Miller held down the top three positions.

Returning to green, at lap 31, Bangas and Alvis bolted in nose-to-tail formation. Alvis took a quick peek to the inside of the leader off Turn 2. Bangas denied the bid, though, and pulled away by a car-length.

The last of the race's six caution flags was displayed on lap 38 for debris on the frontstretch. Lining up for the final restart, Bangas was out front, followed by Alvis, Miller, Weddell, Florian and Craig Carlton.

Under green for the last time, Florian quickly passed Weddell for fourth. On lap 46, however, Carlton slipped by Florian to take over the final Top Dog transfer spot.

At the checkers, Bangas was the winner by two car-lengths over Alvis. Miller was third, while Carlton held onto fourth. Florian rounded out the top five.

C Main

Jason Styron started on the pole and led all 50 circuits for his first victory of the season in the C Main.

Nelson Moody, who started third on the 10-car grid, moved up to second on the opening lap and tailed Styron until lap 42.

Derek Miller, usually an A Main constant, was bumped back to the C Main after mechanical problems prevented him from posting a qualifying attempt. Proving that the issue was only temporary, Miller roared from the ninth starting spot into the top five on lap 5.

Miller advanced to fourth on lap 7 and moved up another spot on lap 11 when third-place Aaron Leach parked his machine. By lap 18, Miller was riding the rear bumper of second-place Moody.

The first caution flag flew on lap 26 when Cory Millard spun in Turns 1 and 2, collecting Sparky West.

Back under green, Styron fashioned a two-length edge over Moody, who had his hands full with Miller.

The second, and final, caution flag appeared on lap 33 for debris on the frontstretch.

As the race resumed, Styron eked out a one-length margin over Moody and Miller, while Curtis Hughes and Chris Crecelius battled for fourth place -- the final Top Dog transfer spot.

On lap 41, Miller ducked to the inside of Moody off Turn 4 and took over the runner-up spot as they headed back into Turn 1 to begin lap 42. Within two laps, Miller had closed on Styron's bumper and was looking for an opening.

Despite pressure from Miller, Styron held firm over the waning circuits and won by a car-length. Miller was second, followed by Moody. Hughes fought off Crecelius for fourth and joined the top three finishers in moving on to the Top Dog finale.

Youth Series

Connor Hall moved out front on lap 10 and rolled to his second straight win in a 25-lapper for the Youth Series. Nine-year-old Macy Causey started on the pole and led the first nine circuits before Hall, 12, took the lead. Cullen Roberts, 11, was third to the checkers.

Qualifying

Adam Florian was quickest in early afternoon time trials. His lap of 8.078 seconds was just enough to edge Travis Wall by 8-thousandths of a second. Robbie Davis, Spencer Saunders and Scott Prillaman were third-, fourth- and fifth-fastest, respectively. Twenty-eight Pro Series drivers posted qualifying attempts with little more than half a second separating the field.

Connor Hall was fastest in Youth Series qualifying, at 8.583 seconds. Macy Causey was second-quickest, while Cullen Roberts was slowed by mechanical issues and did not make a timed run.
